European Hard Target - longest released version

Hard Target was heavily cut for getting R-rating in US. Outside US (Europe, Japan...) a longer they released longer version with some of the removed action put back. This makes film run more fluently and it appears a bit more carefully edited. However editing room floor is covered with plenty of usefull material which should be used to make the ultimate version.

HARD TARGET (1993, US)

European release Description!

'Complete director's cu't includes more deleted material.

From alt.asian-movies...

It was a lot more fire-power than the US MPAA were going to stomach in a mainstream release. Remember the big guy in the checked shirt who Van Damme shot with an upside-down Baretta? The editing in the uncut print gives you the impression that 26 shots were fired! (As opposed to the 8 in the R cut.) Also, it's got a bigger body count in the finale, a new credits sequence & more arrows in Chuck Pfarrer's body, and lots more blood squibs! Some scenes gain less than a second or two of extra footage, but it gives it that Woo kick! Whereas Van Damme only got off 2 or 3 shots at most of his live targets in the R, he manages to empty whole clips into bodies in the uncut version. AND his climactic fight with Lance Henriksen is much punchier. Lance spits buckets of blood, and Jean-Claude canes his ass! You can also see Lance physically clobbering JC with that burning plank a lot more than the R edit!

And the UK audiences got to see all of the above carnage, and the US didn't? Aren't the UK censors some of the toughest in the world? It makes you wonder...

I FOUND SOMETHING

In the beginning: When Pfaffer gets his first arrow, hanging in the tree a bit longer: ca 5s.
Laying on the ground, takes the arrow off himself: 5s.
After a small building explodes, Pfaffer has some burning wounds: 4s.
They shoot Pfaiffer and they miss. Pfaiffer takes canister of gasoline, rolls on ground and thows it towards enemies. Gasoline and one bike explodes. 25 seconds
Arrow hits the leg: 10s. And before the last arrow shot, one short close-up shot, and slow-motion when last arrow hits. - Body floating in the water. ca.4 second.

In the end: Big guy in the checked shirt who Boudreaux (yes, its Damne) shot with an upside-down Baretta? I did listen and counted 12 shots in the R version and 29 in the long one!. About 5 seconds. After that Boudreaux shoots two men dressed in black with 9+11 shots. 12 seconds.
A man with an arrow in his throat, we can see him a bit longer and closer before he falls down. 4s.
When Natasha shoots one bad guy with 6 shots, in R-versio we see first 3 shots and can only hear the other three while we must look (birds) elsewere. Longer version isn't any longer in this case, but we can see all three 6 bullet hits.

After that happens so much, one guy get two or 5 shots (before Douvee gets hit in leg) it's few seconds (3 maybe);
The Boudreaux gets extra pistol, and shoot 4 or 7 times a man in black (1 Second maybe) (We se other man is coming, very short extraclip) and kicks the first one. Then turns and shoots 2 or 5 times the man we just saw moment ago (we did not see him in R-versio), kicks him and shoots again maybe 8 times, but not in R-versio. 4 more seconds or so.

After Boudreaux and Pik van Cleaf meet (they have very interesting competition) a man with hand granade gets many more hits. And so does the other man after that, just before the explosion.
It's just a little more close-ups and a bit more blood when Boudreaux finally gets van Cleaf (that's Vosloo).

Now Boudreaux says to Fouchon (Henriksen): You should know better (how does it feel to be hunted) and we can't see him. Fouchon is in the middle of the fire shooting blindly all around. It seems he's loosing it. 34 seconds. And when Boudreaux 'takes his best shot' we can see how this shot really hits Fouchon. (A bloody hit in the back)
Then when Fouchon tries to shoot Boudreaux, but gets kicked by him, Fouchon spills more blood.
And there's some more short ones too.

'The long version' I've seen was PAL laserdisc released in UK, it gives somethin more to R rated version, and it gives a lot to the film. It is not a complete version or any director's cut anyway. The first version lasted about 2 hours, and this UK version ends a long before it.

US release (1993)
