Universe (DVD 5071) - Hong Kong

Region R0 (All) / NTSC / 102.38 min
Aspect ratio  2.35:1 letterboxed,
no anamorphic
Sound DD 5.1 Cantonese (remix) (384 Kbps)
Subtitles
(removable)
Chinese (traditional)
Chinese (simplified)
Extra - trailer (with burned in Chinese/English subs, 2.35:1)
- info on Cast Members Lung Kim Sang, Yam Yuen Yee, Chan Suk Leung, Mui Suet Si; Writer Tong Dick Sang and Director John Woo.
Unfortunately movie has no English subtiles, movie trailer is subtitled and cast info is available in English. Also back cover tells the story and ending of the movie in English. Picture is in original aspect ratio (2.35:1) but not anamorphic. Being so old movie picture quality is surprisingly good but sometimes soft. Remixed soundtrack sounds sometimes a little bit weird and echoing but most of the time it is OK. Most of the time it is nearly mono version but occacionally it provides some surround efforts.

Region R0 (All) / NTSC

Don't know for sure about this DVD but as WA DVD it could be
- Letterboxed not anamorphic video
- Mandarin language only (DD 5.1)
- Removable English and Chinese (Simplified) subtitles only.
- Menu (In Chinese) with scene selection and subtitle selection
- No trailers or biographies
- No region coding
- NTSC Video Format

It really would be great if it had English subtitles. I must try to find out that.

Princess Cheung Ping (1959)
is earlier movie version of same story. It was directed by Cho Kei and starring Chan Ho-Kau, Yum Kim-Fai, Pak Suet-Sin and Zing Tsz-Pak.

PRINCESS CHEUNG PING (1959)
Winson (WDV 3017P)   - Hong Kong
Region R0 (All) / NTSC / 101.35 min
Aspect ratio  1.33:1 pan&scan,
no anamorphic
Sound DD 2.0 Cantonese (192 Kbps)
Subtitles Chinese (traditional)
Chinese (simplified)
Extra - Nothing.

Menu in English and Chinese but movie has Chinese subtitles only. All Cantonese opera movies I've seen (in online-shops mostly) has no English subtitles at all. I guess there might not be so much demand for these kind of movies in the West. Picture quality is far from being perfect. Some scenes has so much scratches and other dirt. But it would be watchable.

Princess Chang Ping
So far I have found out info about two differend DVD releases. Hong Kong version Universe (DVD 5071) has no English subtitles. Mainland China version released by WA (D-DVD 2250) details are unverified. I try to find out if it has English subtitles but this is just wishful thingking, I'm afraid. Many WA releases has English subtitles so maybe this could be subtitled too.
