DVD News! (again!) (30.6.1998)
A Better Tomorrow DVD re-release
Media Asia is planning re-release A Better Tommorrow DVD with original
mono soundtrack. According to Frank Djeng on alt.video.dvd, posted on June 19
(Djeng works at Tai Seng Video, so consider him a reliable source of
information)...
Media Asia plans to re-release A Better Tomorrow 1 DVD in the future with
the original mono soundtrack of the film. No dates had been set, though.
Dolby Digital soundtrack of A Better Tomorrow got so much negative critic that
it made Media Asia to think again so they are going to release it with
original mono sound. Many people said they shoud have leave soundtrack as it
originally was. However I personally think a movie classic like this Deserves
treatment like this. But it should have done better. However if they wanted to
make the ultimate DVD release why didn't they originally release it with BOTH
Dolby Digital and original monoural soundtracks? I think it would have been
the optimal solution.
Next John Woo film: Mission Impossible 2?
(30.6.1998)
About King's Ransom, I also hope they could begin it soon but.. Now it
looks like they will do something else first. Woo maybe directs MISSION
IMPOSSIBLE 2 with Tom Cruise and filming could start in October. Chow Yun-Fat
has something else too after The Corrupter. ANNA AND THE KING (the most
well-known musical version is Roger-Hammerstein's THE KING AND I with Yul
Brynner). Just like i told in news section in May, this King and I remake
filmed in Australia will be the next job for Chow Yun-Fat. Looks like shooting
of King's Ransom could begin sometimes in 1999. So many sites online tell this
I almost must believe it is true. Unfortunately. But Mission Impossible story
has some potential and if they have a good script Woo could make a good film.
According to Ain't It Cool News
John Woo surely has some work to do in the future:
Chang expressed that John Woo currently has 6 films in preparation, one of
which is The Last Word starring Paul Newman and Harrison Ford. As for Chow
Yun-Fat's King's Ransom, the script is still being written. He also has two
collaborations with Tom Cruise, the sequel to Mission: Impossible will begin
production in October, and a Chinese costume film Tai Ping Tin Gok (Lit:
Peaceful Heavenly Nation), a spy film with Nicholas Cage Black September, a
World War II Romance and a France period piece.

John Woo films on DIVX (13.6.1998)
John Woo films will be released on DIVX discs. DIVX is almost like DVD but
you have two days to watch the movie. Time begins when you first time watch it
and if you after two days want to watch your DIVX movie you must pay every
time you watch it. US$3.95 every time! (The first two days is US$4.95, at
least the first titles available now. For sure I don't really like this idea.
One of the first DIVX is Broken Arrow. It is not available on DVD yet, and
there is no info where they would release it on DVD. And the same goes with
Face/Off. Both of these will be released on DIVX 'soon'. Hopefully DVD
releases would happen soon, because I will definately skip DIVX.

New John Woo DVD releases (7.6.1998)
Hard Boiled Special Edition will be released in Wednesday, June 10th. This
is long waited Voyager's Criterion edition. It will include extras from LD
version as well as extras from The Killer LD. More
info
According to the information given by the marketing department of Mega
Star, their next batch of DVDs of Hong Kong movies will be released at the end
of July. The titles include the following:
- Once Upon a Time in China 1, 2 and 3
- Once a Thief
- Beast Cop
- Bullet in the Head
- Centre Stage
- Till We Meet Again
I can tell you I'm really waiting for the Bullet in the head DVD. Currently
there is no decent LD or DVD available, Hong Kong LD could be good but it is
out of print. Japanese LD does not have English subtitles. And Voyager is not
going to release Bullet in the Head in their Criterion Collection. But soon we
will get this DVD and if it is like those A Better Tomorrow DVDs from Mega
Star, it will be really great. One of the greatest films ever made in its best
transfer ever available.
